Autism, Your Journey

Mothers of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder have traveled a long journey. Those journeys have allowed each of us, at times, to reflect on the past and more importantly they have given each of us the opportunity to focus on the future. We have had many joyful moments along the way, but also, many challenging times. Each experience we have had over the years, may be an inspiration to one of our Mom’s reading your story, or it may be something relatable that they can be inspired by knowing someone else has been through the same thing, and understands.

We as women are all connected through our journey with autism. We have unique, yet similar chapters of our lives that we can share to encourage someone, and let them know they are not alone. Please feel free to share your story and inspire someone on this page. Please use your first name only in your story. Thank You

Terri’s Story

25 years ago the resources for children on the autism spectrum were very limited. Pediatricians were not fully aware of autism and had very little knowledge. By the age of three my son begin to receive referrals to see specialist at the Dan Marino Center in Westin Florida. A Neurologist who specialized in autism spectrum disorder was just what my son needed. The neurologist was able to provide enlightenment in areas I was not knowledgeable about regarding my son and challenges he was experiencing. As my son grew, I realized the importance of me increasing my knowledge about the services that would be available to him as a child, teenager and a young adult. I began researching and was introduced to the State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (apdcares.org). This agency provides the services that are needed for our children to be able to have their basic needs met from an early age. I am so grateful for the knowledge that I have gained regarding this agency. It provided me with the opportunity to share this information with others.

Last year I felt it was time to expand my resources to Mom’s in the community and through conversation with a team of Moms, Women United for Autism LLC was established to celebrate and empower Mothers of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
